Evangelism and Mission in Contemporary Society
By examining Biblical models and teaching, the course will consider the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ in a changing society that is increasingly characterized by individualism, pluralism, relativism, consumerism, and secularism. Students will be challenged to understand the good news not only from the point of view of the Christian proclaiming the message, but also from the point of view of the audience (whether secular or religious) to whom we have been called to go and make disciples.
- To equip students to teach, mobilize, and lead congregations to carry out the Great Commission in contemporary society.
- To challenge assumptions and traditions on the basis of a Biblical view of evangelism.
- To enable students to respond Biblically to societal changes.
- To provide an understanding of the historic and contemporary practice of evangelism in the Christian church
- To acquaint students with current social trends as they relate to the Christian faith, and to challenge students to reflect on how to respond effectively.
About the Professor: Dr. Steve McMullin
Rev. Dr. Steve McMullin grew up in Woodstock, NB and is a graduate of Atlantic Baptist College, Acadia University (B.A. Honours), Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (M.A.T.S.), and the University of New Brunswick (Ph.D.—Sociology). His Ph.D. dissertation about congregational decline focused on ways that churches are affected by and respond to the secularization of society. His research interests focus on ways to bring renewal and meaningful change to established congregations, ways to present the gospel in culturally informed and effective ways in an increasingly secular social environment, and ways that congregations can address and respond to domestic violence.
